Brick Pavers Vs Stone
The bricks for block paver installation are made from concrete. They are manufactured under strict conditions, and many colours and textures are available. Their advantages include comparatively lower cost, a huge variety of materials selection, and ease of design, use, and installation resulting from their uniform properties. Natural stone patios and driveways have the clear advantage of being the real thing and provide an unmatched aesthetic appeal. They are more difficult to install because of their irregular shapes, and materials are usually more costly unless you’re near a stone quarry. Very durable installations can be done with correctly chosen and installed stone.

Brick Paver Base Prep
Our base for a paver patio or stone walkway installation is typically 16-18″ thick of well compacted crushed gravel- more for driveways and heavy use or weak areas. This is set on geotechnical fabric to prevent structural degradation and fatigue. As with all our work, we understand the damage caused by leaving organic matter below the base, and ensure to remove all of it. This is important if the paver or stone installation is going to last, especially with the frost cycles and moisture seen in the Red Deer area. Thick, well compacted gravel mats like this mean that the paver driveway or stone patio will move together with the seasons and is much less likely to show heaves and dents from use.
Design Options
Building with brick pavers or stone offers a unique ability to edge garden beds and have the edging flow into the sidewalk or other installation. This can tie the landscape together in a way other edging options can’t. We can also do unique inlay patterns through the stone patio or brick driveway. Carefully varying materials throughout the installation offers further design options. Flagstone paths can be laid out to include thyme or other plants in the spaces between the rock.
